Why Custom Railings Are Different
A stock railing from a home store is built to fit a range of standard openings. That works if your porch or staircase happens to match those dimensions, but most homes in the Hill Country have unique layouts, uneven ground, or non-standard post spacing. A custom railing is built to fit your exact measurements, which means it looks like it belongs there instead of looking like an afterthought.
Custom railings also let you choose the material, the profile of the handrail, the spacing of the balusters, and the finish. That control matters because a railing is a safety feature that you see and touch every day. Getting it right means the railing meets building code requirements for height and baluster spacing while also matching the style of your home. The process starts with a site visit, not a catalog order.
The Site Visit and Measurements
Our crew comes to your property to see the space where the railing will go. We look at the existing structure, the type of flooring or decking, and the attachment points. A concrete porch needs different anchors than a wood deck. We also check for any slope or unevenness that affects how the railing sits. Every measurement is taken on site because no two homes are exactly alike.
During that visit, we discuss the look you want: square or round balusters, a flat or curved top rail, and whether you want the railing to match existing metalwork on the property. We also talk about the height required by local code for your specific application. That information goes into the design and fabrication. No work starts until the measurements and the design are confirmed.
Fabrication and Preparation
Once the design is set, the railing is cut, welded, and assembled in our shop. That is where the precision happens. Each piece is cut to the exact length, and the joints are welded full-strength, not just tacked. The railing is then ground smooth and prepared for the finish. If it is getting a powder coat, the surface is cleaned and treated before the coating is applied and baked.
For a welded railing, the joints are the weak point if they are not done properly. A good weld is consistent and fully fused, with no gaps or pinholes. The railing is also checked for squareness and fit before it is loaded up. This stage takes time, but it ensures that when the crew arrives at your home, the railing fits without field adjustments that weaken the structure.
Installation Day: On-Site Work
On installation day, the crew loads the railing and all necessary tools and hardware into the truck and drives to your home. We start by removing any old railing if needed, taking care not to damage the surrounding surface. Then we mark the post locations, drill the anchor holes, and set the posts in place. The posts are plumbed and leveled before being secured with the appropriate anchors for your surface.
The railing panels are then attached to the posts, and the handrail is fitted. All connections are tightened and checked for stability. The crew cleans up all debris, including old railing pieces, drill shavings, and packaging, before leaving. The job is done when the railing is solid, the gate swings freely if there is one, and the work area is clean. You can use the railing immediately.
What to Check After Installation
After the railing is installed, walk the full length and grip the handrail. It should feel solid with no wobble or flex. Check that the baluster spacing is consistent and that no gap is wide enough for a small child to slip through. If the railing includes a gate, open and close it several times to make sure the latch engages properly and the gate does not drag on the ground.
Ask the contractor to show you how to care for the finish. A powder-coated railing needs only occasional washing with mild soap and water. A painted railing may need touch-ups if it gets scratched. Check the anchor points once a year to make sure the bolts are still tight. If you notice any rust or loose joints, call a professional to address it before it becomes a bigger problem.
