The work

About our structural welding and repair

Structural welding and repair is what you call when something heavy breaks and needs to hold weight again. A cracked trailer frame, a snapped equipment mount, a bent steel beam, or a busted farm implement. You are not replacing the whole thing; you need the broken part made strong, right where it sits.

We start by cleaning the area and grinding out any old, cracked weld. Then we assess the base metal—mild steel, stainless, or something else—and pick the right rod and machine setting. We fit reinforcement plates if needed, weld in controlled passes, and let each cool. Finally, we grind the bead smooth and check for full penetration.

What changes from job to job is the access. A beam in a tight corner takes longer than a trailer out in the open. The size of the crack, how rusted the metal is, and whether the material is common or odd all move the time. Weather matters too: wind and cold can affect the weld, adding setup time for shielding.

On the day, we park near the work, protect anything nearby with a welding blanket, and set up our leads. We clean up slag, grind dust, and scraps before we leave. You do not need to do anything beforehand except clear the area around the break. After we finish, the repair is ready to use right away.

Preheat and Post-Heat

Thick steel or cold weather calls for preheating the metal before welding and letting it cool slowly to prevent cracking in the heat-affected zone.

Butt vs. Lap Joint

A butt joint aligns two pieces edge to edge; a lap joint overlaps them. Each needs a different rod angle and pass sequence for full strength.

How the job runs

Our 4-step structural welding and repair process

01

Assess and Clean

We inspect the break, check the metal type and thickness, then grind away rust, paint, and old weld to get to clean base metal.

02

Fit and Prep

We clamp pieces in alignment, bevel edges if needed, and cut reinforcement plates. The gap and fit determine how the weld will hold.

03

Weld and Cool

We run the bead in controlled passes, letting each cool slightly. For thick material, we may preheat or slow-cool to avoid stress cracks.

04

Finish and Inspect

We grind the weld smooth, check for pinholes or undercut, and clean up all slag, dust, and metal scraps from the site.

The difference

Why Walker Welding for structural welding and repair

  • Load Path

A weld that looks good can fail if the load path is wrong. We align the repair so the stress goes through the strongest part of the joint, not into a weak spot.

  • Rod Selection

Using the wrong rod makes a brittle weld. We match the filler metal to the base material—whether it is mild steel, stainless, or a hard-to-find alloy—so the repair lasts.

  • Heat Control

Too much heat warps the metal; too little gives poor fusion. We manage the amperage and travel speed to get full penetration without burning through.
