The work

About our railing and step rail installation

When a homeowner calls about railing installation, they usually have a deck, porch, or set of steps that feels unsafe or incomplete. The existing structure may have no handrail, or the old railing is rusted, wobbly, or fails to meet current building codes. They need something that keeps people from falling and also fits the look of their home.

We start by measuring the run and checking the attachment points. Steel or aluminum tubing is cut to length, then welded into sections on site using a MIG welder. Posts are set into the deck framing or concrete with brackets and lag bolts. Every joint is ground flush, and the whole railing is primed and painted or powder coated for weather resistance.

The main cost drivers are the total linear footage, the material chosen, and the complexity of the layout. Curved stairs, multiple landings, or uneven ground add time. Access matters too: if the crew has to carry materials up a narrow side yard or around landscaping, setup takes longer. Weather can delay powder coating or welding on wet surfaces.

On the day of installation, we bring drop cloths and plywood to protect decks and patios. We park the truck close to the work area to minimize hauling. After welding, we sweep up metal filings, grind dust, and packing debris. Before we arrive, clear the area of furniture and potted plants. After we leave, no special care is needed beyond occasional cleaning.

Hot-dip galvanizing

Steel railings that will be exposed to rain or sprinklers can be hot-dip galvanized after fabrication to prevent rust from the inside out.

Welded vs. bolted joints

Welded joints are stronger and cleaner than bolted connections, but they require the welder to manage heat distortion so the railing stays straight.

How the job runs

Our 4-step railing and step rail installation process

01

Measure and plan

We measure the entire run, note any slopes or curves, and check the existing structure for solid attachment points. We discuss the railing height, baluster spacing, and style.

02

Cut and fit

Steel or aluminum tubing is cut to length on site. We dry-fit the sections to verify the fit before any welding begins, adjusting for any out-of-square conditions.

03

Weld and assemble

Sections are clamped in place and welded together using a MIG welder. Posts are bolted to the deck or concrete. All welds are ground smooth and the railing is checked for level and plumb.

04

Finish and clean up

The railing is primed and painted or powder coated. We sweep up all metal shavings, grind dust, and debris. The crew loads out and leaves the site clean.

Why Walker Welding for railing and step rail installation

  • On-site fit

Every railing is measured and welded in place, so it fits the exact contours of your deck or steps. Prefabricated railings often leave gaps or require shims that look sloppy and weaken the attachment.

  • Smooth joints

A skilled welder grinds every joint flush and smooth, so there are no sharp edges or rough spots that can snag clothing or cause cuts. This takes extra time but makes the railing safe to touch.

  • Code compliance

We build to the standard railing height and baluster spacing required by residential building codes. Getting it right during fabrication avoids the cost and hassle of rework after an inspection.
